Bruce Springsteen’s music and performances have provided an emotional outlet for thousands of fans all over the world. Drawing from participant observation, the statements of Springsteen fans, and the life and music of Springsteen, Randall’s ethnographic treatment documents the ways in which fans are inspired to create a global cultural community. This community functions as a social network, offering emotional support, spirituality, and the motivation for doing good works.
Randall discovers that the sensitivities and values Springsteen instills in his fans are as alive and valid as those experienced by adherents of widely recognized spiritual traditions. Her in-depth examination of the thoughts and actions of these fans reveals that embracing nontraditional spiritual values can engender multifaceted feelings, including trust, hope, and respect for humankind. By acknowledging that a personal spiritual connection can develop outside a sectarian landscape, an appreciation of and tolerance for different belief systems can be cultivated and nourished.

Finding Grace in the Concert Hall Community and Meaning among Springsteen Fans edition by Linda Randall Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
The author pulls together new & interesting and disparite perspectives, from a view which encompasses a new ( & true) meaning, not just about Springsteen but beyond. It is a delightful confluence of anthropology, sociology and the writer's own eye that make this book a must read, not simply for fans of the Boss but fans who appreciate clear eyed and novel ways of looking at community.
This is a book I would recommend to the hard-core fan and the casual fan. Even the non-fan who wants to try to understand fandom will be enlightened. The perspective of an anthropology student makes this book a standout. Extremely well written and very insightful. A tasty length that does not get mawkish but still presents the full picture.
It is fascinating, well-written, and comes from a perspective I haven't seen before. Cultural anthopology + group psychology (in a NOT boring academic way) + solid Bruce love= one wonderful book. Searching for a holiday gift? This is a beaut!
Linda K. Randall (aka Linda Abel...don't know why) has done an astonishing thing. She has successfully convinced Wake Forrest University that Bruce Springsteen is a religion. It's remarkable because it is true and it is remarkable her writing is up to her insight. I've read it twice. My Iranian born son-in-law had always eschewed Springsteen until -- you guessed it -- he saw him live. He looked at us with new respect the next day and babbled superlatives, concluding by saying "...it was like a religious experience." Linda's book is fun and real Sorta like Bruce.
good book!
I have been a big Springsteen fan for many years. This book articulates what his music means to his fans and how it impacts on their lives. A fascinating study. It is well written and documented. I would highly recommend it.
Linda really captures the essence of why I have been a fan for 40 years. From the small bars and theaters to the mega stadium it has been a great ride. Camping out for tickets, lining a day ahead for the pit. Until you have experienced it, you will never understand. Excellent book.
